Magick Explained

Made in August 2017, for The Number Shop Gallery’s Art Festival Show in Edinburgh Fringe. This show was my first solo show in which I exhibited six new books including this book illustrating Alestair Crowley’s definition of Magick. A slightly tongue in cheek book which uses complex symbols and patterns taken from Crowley rituals on the Kaballah, I was inspired by the growing trend of ‘Modern Magick’ books and the amelioration of dense subjects.

Made in August 2017, for The Number Shop Gallery’s Art Festival Show in Edinburgh Fringe. This show was my first solo show in which I exhibited six new books including this book of archaic and obscure fruit idioms. I’ve always been interested in linguistics and particularly turns of phrase that have died out for one reason or another.

Made in August 2017, for The Number Shop Gallery’s Art Festival Show in Edinburgh Fringe. This show was my first solo show in which I exhibited six new books including this Book of Secrets sequel.  The book is hand-bound with found black and white photographs inserted and illustrations in brown ink and watercolour. It is a collection of stories, from my own life and the lives of others. It is filled with personal secrets and all characters within the stories are titled A. Having collected all the secrets left by readers of the first Book of Secrets, I created this second book. Personal sigils also decorate the pages and readers were again asked to leave more secrets.

Made in March 2017, first shown at The Grey People, an interdisciplinary show at Edinburgh College of Art.  The book is hand-bound with 35mm film photographs inserted and illustrations in brown ink. It is a collection of stories, from my own life and the lives of others. It is filled with personal secrets and all characters within the stories are titled A. Haloed women’s heads and nude female letter forms decorate the pages as well as personal sigils. When the book was exhibited I asked readers to leave their own secrets in a jar which I collected at the end of each day, I didn’t tell readers what the secrets were for, other than that as I had told them mine, they owed me.
